The Yarkon River Authority is currently leading the “Basin Tool Basket for the Prevention and Reduction of Pollution in the Yarkon River” in order to identify the existing tools and produce new tools that will make it possible to significantly reduce and decrease the risk of river pollution.
The Yarkon Drainage Basin, with an area of approximately 1,800 square kilometers, is a space of many different faces – the western part of the basin includes an urban area that carries the tender of economic activity, population density and land cover in Israel while the eastern part includes natural areas and rural settlements.
The work’s area of reference is the drainage basin which is crossed by the Green Line and divided into many local authorities and various statutory bodies that operate in aspects related to the River Authority and the existing risk of river pollution.
The Yarkon River is the lowest and most vulnerable natural system in the drainage basin and in light of the scope of human activity and the potential for anthropogenic pollution, the river has been damaged in the past and is also expected to be damaged in the future from various pollution events.
The extent of human activity in all its forms in the Yarkon Basin expresses a long list of threats to the water quality in the Yarkon River. Due to the multiplicity of risk factors in the basin, their number, scope and dynamics in time and space, the formation of the toolbox requires analysis to identify the tools with the highest efficiency and applicability. The process of formulating the toolbox is a learning, consulting and dynamic process.
The project is an important component of the basin conception promoted by the Yarkon River Authority, with regard to issues related to the river. The team of experts is in charge of preparing the toolbox for preventing and reducing Nahal Yarkon pollution, under the guidance of the Yarkon River Authority staff and accompanied by a broad steering committee that includes a wide range of stakeholders and professionals from various fields.
